MikeA:
As Pete said, shouold not be a problem with adhesion on Lacquer. Most anything will stick to lacquer. I have finished applying the primer to my wing panels and ailerons. Almost all of the primer is sanded off just leaving a hint of color gray. The fuse, stab and elevator have been primed and sanded. Once the rain lets up and the temperatures come down to where I can paint, I'll beging the painting. Presently I am looking for a paint scheme or red white and blue and yellow; those are the colors I have available and am not about to go and buy mor paint. However, I notice that my canopy has deloped a small crack and the carbon fiber is not fully filled in. So I am going to paint the canopy color sky blue (I'll mix blue and white to get a light blue). Do any of you have experience on painting the Carbon Fiber canopy? Is primer required? I am using single stage paint, so no clear coat required. |

Thanks to both for the responses. I think I'll stick with the tried true method of nitrate dope. That's my comfort zone I guess. I have painted carbon fiber wheel pants but not a canopy, Should be the same principle though. I started by giving them a light sanding followed by a coat of silver paint misted on. This really brings out the imperfections. I used some Cargroom glazing spot putty( red stuff) to fill in the nicks and voids and then fine sanded the silver but not all the way off. 2 light coats of paint yielded a set of beautiful light wheel pants. Something about painting over silver that makes the diff.
