My name is Mike Hester, and I'm the owner and operator of Custom Airframes. I live in Woodstock, GA, USA with my wife and three children, and for Custom Airframes, I design, build and fly custom-built radio-controlled Pattern aircraft. I've been flying RC planes since 1980, when my dad introduced me to them. My father took me to see his friend's Top Flite Corsair, and that was it for me. I was hooked. The first time I saw a pattern plane I knew it was for me. Being a kid at the time, I couldn't afford it. Now that I'm a big kid, I can sort of afford it, and I found the cash and the courage to begin flying competitively in Pattern in 2001. The first Pattern aircraft I flew in competion was a Typhoon 2000, which I built from scratch. Somewhat later on, I decided to try my hand at modifying the Typhoon design to suit my personal tastes, and developed the "Tempest" - a modifcation on the Typhoon. I am a builder and pilot. I get satisfaction from both equally. | .......... |

After successfully building and flying (and competing with) the Tempest design, I began to receive a few requests from other building enthusiasts who wanted copies of the plans for the Tempest modifications. I provided them with the drawings, and the Tempest became a moderate world-wide success. After some serious supply problems with parts for the Tempest, I began to feel the need for a completely new design. Making a clean break from the Typhoon series, I started with a blank piece of paper and designed the pattern airplane that I wanted for myself. After successfully competing with the Black Magic prototype, including a 4th place finish at the Nationals and a district championship, I realized I had the makings of an extremely competitive airframe. In late summer of 2005, I began making changes that I felt would lead to an even better performing airplane. After a few changes such as fixed gear, larger tail section and slightly redesigned wing, the Black MagicV2 was born. After MANY requests for drawings and parts, I decided to make the Black MagicV2 available as a short kit. The response has been overwhelming and the rest is history. Custom Airframes was formed to handle the many requests for this airplane. |
