The Black Magic VF3 is the result of years of testing and design. The plane was designed from the ground up to be a laser cut kit. Every piece of this plane was engineered to create the strongest, lightest and easiest structure we could imagine. The use of hand selected contest grade basla, foam and composites allows a finished plane of a quality never believed possible before...especially for a plane of this size. At the time of this writing, it is the tallest F3A plane in the world at the canopy and fin. The fuselage side area is on the order of 850 square inches.

This is not an modification to the Black Magic V2, this is an entirely new airplane. The building structure is somewhat similar in exectution, but that is where the similarity ends.

The flight characteristics are second to NONE. Radical new thinking was needed to create a plane capable of handling the toughest manuevers the FAI schedules had to offer, and yet still be equally as docile and easy to manage for even the most novice of pilots. The results are suprisingly stunning. This is a plane that has to be flown to be appreciated. One of the advantages electrics have enjoyed in the past few yeas has been a "pocket of stability" that seems to surround the plane, allowing a very locked in feel at very low speeds. With the VF3, this same advantage has been created with the use of glow engines. Speed control is phenomenal, snaps are effortless and remove all doubt with little to no line displacement at all. Very slow rolls and knife edge flight at very low flight speeds require very little rudder to maintain level flight. The tail shows very little "digging". Up and down line snaps and rolls are very axial with no wobbling.

The best part is that the plane requires very little mixing at all. Novice and intermediate pilots can easily fly this plane with no mixing. Masters and FAI pilots will want a hair of mix to full left rudder deflection, but nothing else to speak of. No aileron differential is required and there is no notable roll coupling at all.

The VF3 is sold as a kit. That being said, the time required to build it is not much more than your average ARF thanks to the self aligning tabs and low parts count. All that is required is a flat table and a straight line. There are no secret voodoo tricks to building this plane. Even if you have never built a kit before, this plane is by far one of the easiest planes to build in the world. Compound curves were kept to a minimum to make monokote a viable option for finishing. This plane can be completely assembled and ready for finish in about 20 hours of working time. The finish on the prototype took me 2 days.

The quality of ths kit rivals the best imported kits in the world, and the pro level kit is unlike anything ever seen before. There are currently two options available: a basic kit, which contains exactly the same parts as the pro level kit without all of the high dollar composites, and a pro level kit, which was designed to create the very best structure you can build. The use of carbon laminates is extensive, so the pro level kit is not cheap by any means. However this plane is designed to LAST. It has been fully tested in all of the FAI sequences through 2011 and shows no weaknesses. The structure itself will take the pounding of thousands of flights requiring only routine inspection and maintenance. If you are looking at an investment in a pattern competition weapon for the long haul, the VF3 has no equal. And I say that with the utmost confidence.
